About Thattu Ella & Gal Oruwa Falls
Thattu Ella ('Tiered Falls') and the adjoining 'Gal Oruwa' (Stone Canoe) formation are among the most geographically fascinating waterfalls in the Sinharaja watershed. Here, the river splits and tumbles down several consecutive stone terraces.
Over thousands of years, the swirling currents have polished smooth deep troughs into the solid rock bed, resembling giant natural bathtubs and stone flumes. The surrounding jungle canopy casts a cool, shaded green tint over the swirling waters.
The hike to Thattu Ella is gentle and shaded by wild kitul palm trees, wild cardamom, and bamboo groves, making it a peaceful half-day excursion for couples and nature enthusiasts.
