About Weli Oya Rock Pools & Sandy Creek
Weli Oya ('Sandy Stream') is a beautiful tributary of the Gin River, named for its rare stretches of fine golden sand interspersed with smooth granite rock formations. Unlike the main river, Weli Oya is shallower and calmer, making it perfect for leisurely bathing.
The creek has carved out a series of natural rock pools over millennia — some knee-deep with sandy bottoms ideal for children, others waist-deep with gentle currents that create a natural jacuzzi effect as water flows over sculpted stone lips.
The banks are lined with towering bamboo groves and wild tropical flowers, creating a shaded, private oasis that feels worlds away from civilization. Local kingfishers and water monitors are frequent visitors to this tranquil spot.
